Organic Birdi
- Africa SMME Award Winning Brand – Building the South African Economy-

Charlene Lewison, Director of Birdi Golf Apparel is the driving force behind the selection of Birdi merchandise. Charlene’s co-ordination and collections hail from her total commitment and understanding of world-wide global trends, especially the environment.
Charlene is very environmentally conscious. A vegan, aspiring to organic way of life, her compassion includes the animal kingdom and fauna and flora. Being holistic in her approach she is considerate of her golfers, breathing naturally, feeling comfortable and ensuring the colours she uses are acceptable for the players psyche- the fabrics she chooses are un-synthetic of the highest quality.

Her total commitment is to work with natural fibres, eg 100% raw cottons, single mercerized, double mercerized cottons. This has stood Birdi in great stead, guiding and leading within the golf industry. The environment is considered with every decision made.

Birdi is endorsed by the SA Cotton Board. Birdi is, and will always remain totally organic.  Charlene’s knowledge and understanding of working with textiles has been the driving force behind the success of the Birdi brand.

The golfer (being in the sun all day) has to feel as comfortable as possible and  he needs to breathe correctly.

With every golf shirt coordinated and designed by Charlene, her entire understanding of colours and stripe formation, and fabric used for that garment is considered with great care.

When Charlene started working with Birdi  12 years ago, arriving from a fashion background, having studied and researched  textiles and  working within top factories she could not understand why the fabric used for the golfer was not being used in the direction it needed to be. A lot of heavy grammage  and very dull colours were the flavour of the day.

She turned her industry around instantly and started building her brand. Working within the holistic boundaries behind her knowledge and wisdom she set out to produce South Africa’s leading golf brand – Birdi.

Each new pattern is created independently within each story and is used in many different ways incorporating raw natural fibers for our beautiful South African market.
